Hey y’all, I’m back with a little
more My Hero Academia. Don’t worry, Loki is next, but we’ll be doing all of it
in July. Let’s get to it.
Last time on My Hero Academia,
Bakugo, Todoroki, Yoarashi and Camie finally made some headway with their angry
kindergartners. Using their powers combined, they entertained the kids and connect
with them. Gang Orca is proud of them, and it’s admitted that his tough guy
persona he’s been using is mostly an act and he’s a bit of a softie. In the second
half of the episode, Izuku is dealing with Aoyama being a bit weird, offering
him a weird note “Midoriya, I know,” written in cheese. After some additional
weirdness, Aoyama admits that he’s been watching Izuku and noted that his body
isn’t compatible with his quirk. They have that in common, as Aoyama’s naval
laser gives him indigestion. Izuku concludes that this is what made him an
Aoyama friends. Which is nice. Enough recap, let’s get to it.
Ashido has got some MAD hops. |
We open with Ashido showing off her
breakdancing moves. She’s able to do that spinning on her ass thing that looks
really complicated. Mineta gets beaten by Hagakure when he makes a creepy
remark, standard procedure. Izuku notes that Ashido’s dancing skills probably
could help her in fights, allowing her to control the fights pretty easily.
Aoyama confirms that it’s a solid combo, as he’s had to fight her a couple of
times, and she’s beaten him every time. Ashido offers to show him and Aoyama a
few basic moves, which they agree to. Both boys have the same rhythm of a 30-year-old
ginger, super stiff and unappealing. Ha, self-burn. Kaminari note that Ashido’s
dancing is a bit like Sato’s, the guy who eats sugar to increase his strength, baking,
a hobby that will probably help hero work. He also suggests that Jiro’s music
might also be like that, but she gets super defensive about it, saying music is
just a hobby and threatens to stab his face with her earphone jack when he won’t
drop it.
I do so enjoy when the girls have hand enough and punish Mineta for being a creep. Much more satisfying than the usual Shonen thing of just ignoring creepy behavior. |
Class begins, and future narrator Izuku
reminds us this is just the October of his freshman year. Damn, they had a VERY
stressful first few months of school. The students get excited when Aizawa
reminds them that it’s time for their school festival, as it’s normal, not life-threatening,
school stuff. Festivals like this are kind of a big deal in Japanese fiction, I
have no idea if they’re actually a big deal. The different classes set up like
a skit, or café, or game to entertain their classmates and whomever show up.
Sounds fun. Kirishima asks if this is a good idea, you know, given the constant
attacks on the school. Aizawa does say that’s a good point, but this is more about
creating an air of normalcy, and giving the non-hero course students a chance
to show off a little. So… it’s probably a bad idea, but they’re doing it for a
good reason. They are going to make sure the event is closed to the public,
though, unlike previous years. It’ll only be open to students, teachers and a
few special guests.
Aizawa goes to take a nap while
Iida and Yaoyorozu take over and ask their class for suggestions. A maid café,
Mochi stand, arm wrestling, funhouse, creperie, a skit, hero quiz, petting zoo,
and fight to the death are suggestion. These are just the highlights. Care to
guess which was suggested by Izuku and which was by Bakugo? Congrats, you got
it. Mineta only get’s the word “topless” out before Tsu ties him up and
suspends him from the ceiling. She’s gotten really efficient at punishing him,
and I’m all for it. They whittle down a few ideas, but then start arguing over
ideas until the bell rings. Aizawa gets up and tells them to have an idea ready
by tomorrow or they’ll do his idea. An Educational Lecture.
Jiro's reactions in this episode are nothing short of adorable. |
That night, Iida and the side
characters get together to figure out an idea for the festival. Izuku and the
rest of the raid kids are taking make up lessons and Bakugo went to bed early,
if you wondering where they are. Iida suggests that their classes idea should basically
be a “We’re Sorry” to the rest of the student body for the extra crap they’ve
had to deal with this year. The decide that food is out, as they won’t compare
to Lunch Rush. The petting zoo idea is nixed due to the smell and difficulty of
wrangling animals. Ashido suggests, a bit pouty, they throw a big dance party,
which gives Todoroki an idea. He takes Iida’s computer and pulls up a not-YouTube
video of a Rave and suggest that they do something like that. It’s not really
his thing, but he’s seen people have fun doing it. He admits that the got the
idea due to the supplemental training, which makes Sato picture him and Bakugo
at a disco. Ashido offers to write a routine for them, as she’s super excited
they’re doing a variation of her idea. Something the rest of the class is down
for as she seems to have taught Aoyama rhythm in a single afternoon. Mineta has
his first not terrible or inherently creepy idea and points out they’ll need
real jams and Hagakure suggests Jiro. Jiro is super-duper embarrassed about people
talking about her music skills. Hagakure has a high opinion of her, but Jiro
isn’t sure. She insists her music playing is just a hobby. … I feel like I should
point out her parents are musicians, so this is a fairly serious hobby, just
saying. Kaminari gets literally in her face, trying to encourage her to show
off her musical talent. Koda (talks to animals) agrees. Yaoyorozu tries to get
them to back off, but Jiro agrees, saying if she says no, it wouldn’t be rocking
at all.
Iida, the hell are you watching that this is the next suggested video for you? |
While they talk, the not-YouTube
video starts playing a new suggested video. It shows a blue eyed, silver haired
gentleman concealed slightly by shadows.
The next day, Izuku and Togata
visit Eri. Aizawa watches from the door, revealing via flashback that Eri had
been asking for Izuku and Togata since she woke up, so they’re going to see her
to hopefully reduce this poor little girl’s anxiety. The nurse with Aizawa asks
Eri’s doctor if this is really a good idea. He admits that he’s not too worried
as Eri doesn’t have the power to cause any real damage. Her horn is little more
than a bump on her head, to illustrate his point. Eri asks Izuku for his name,
because she never actually heard it during the fight against her guardian,
Overhaul, which is fairly understandable. He tells her to call him Deku, as it’s
easier than Izuku Midoriya. She starts tearing up as she remembers everyone who
got hurt because of her, including Togata losing his powers and Nighteye getting
beaten up. Aizawa reveals that they didn’t tell Eri he died, as she’s dealing
with enough stuff right now. Togata starts rubbing Eri’s head to distract her
from her upset feelings, saying everyone willingly fought for her because they
wanted to see her smile. Eri, in a sort of funny but really heartbreaking
scene, reveals that she can’t actually make her face smile.
Just two potential heroes putting in time to check on their first big rescue's health. It's cute. |
Izuku remembers some of the “highlights”
of verbal abuse Overhaul threw at the child, and realizes that the specter of
Overhaul is still over Eri. Izuku tries to think of something to cheer her up,
and remembers Aoyama telling him that a surprise always cheers him up. He has a
lightbulb moment and goes to Aizawa. He asks his teacher if it’d be possible to
bring Eri to the festival. Togata thinks it’s a brilliant idea and builds up
the idea in Eri’s head even before Aizawa goes to ask for permission. She
literally salivates at the description of candied apples. Aizawa promises to
check with the principle and see what he can do. Togata promises to look after
her during the festival and they’ll have a great time.
Meanwhile, Chief Tsuragamae, the
dog-headed police chief from the Kamino Ward incident, is investigating a persistent,
criminal not-YouTuber. One of his guys tells him that a new video is up. This
not-YouTuber is a villain they’ve been tracking but unable to corner. We’re
shown a faux British speaking villain in a suit and coat holding up a
convenience store with a knife while his assistant records. A pair of heroes
arrive, making the assistant, La Brava, nervous, but the criminal, Gentle Criminal,
isn’t concerned. But he does immediately drop his knife when four more heroes
join the crew. He tells La Brava to cut to black. They jump cut to all of the heroes
down, and the convenience store seems to be wobbling. La Brava points out that he
left the money, but Gentle Criminal keeps walking. He says that it’s not
important to him, putting his place in history is. The cops note that the video
editing has gotten more elaborate recently as the video cuts out.
You're going to think I'm nuts for saying this, but, he is actually much more intimidating than this scene would have you believe. |
We’re shown Gentle Criminal and La
Brava standing atop a building. She complains that their videos aren’t getting
very many hits. Gentle isn’t too concerned, and tries to pour himself a cup of tea.
The wind is too much though, and the stream of tea hits La Brava in the face. He
promises to settle on a score that only he can do, super imposed over the faces
of Izuku, Togata and Eri talking excitedly about the festival. Bastards!
So, this was a fair set up to a non-world-shattering
arc. I think I’ve mentioned this before, but My Hero Academia runs on cycles of
School Arcs and Hero Arcs. Obviously, the Sports Festival and Final Exam are
the former, and Stain and Shie Hassaikai are the latter. The Summer Training
camp arc is somewhere in the middle. I’m not going to lie, overall, this isn’t
my favorite Arc. It’s not bad but Gentle and La Brava are just such tonal whiplash
from Overhaul and the Shie Hassaikai. I’ll get more into that as we go. I
should stress that they aren’t bad as villains, they just don’t really compare
to the act they’re following. They’ve got a relationship best described as
Joker and Harley Quinn is Joker wasn’t an abusive user. He obviously benefits
from her devotion to him, she’s his editor, and she is pretty obsessed with
Gentle. But, unlike Mr. J, who uses and abuses Harley for all she’s worth and
then some, Gentle does seem to genuinely respect La Brava. He’ll occasionally
cause her minor discomfort like the coffee in her face thing, but that’s more
from him being a bit of an idiot than from genuine malice. Again, more details
as we go. I do like this b-story of helping Jiro get a little more confident
with her music. What? She’s a fun side character and I’m glad that she’s
getting a bit of screen time and character development. I think that her insistence
that music is just a hobby, when music clearly dominated her formative years
and her off hours, is kind of odd, but what you gonna do? Eri in the hospital
is heartwarming and breaking at the same time. I’ll be damned if we don’t see
her smile again! But more on that next time. Have a good night, everybody.
