Viewer Log: My Hero Academia ep 89

Here's a quick recap on all things My Hero Academia.

It’s been a while, let’s head back to the world of My Hero Academia.

Rushing in.

Last time on My Hero Academia, Endeavor, the new #1 Hero of Japan, battled Hood, an extremely powerful Nomu. As the world, and his family, watched, Endeavor was pushed to his absolute limit battling this flying monster.  He nearly kills it in one massive blast, but the Nomu ripped its head off and threw it out of the blast radius to defend itself. Endeavor, who lost an eye in the process, is able to destroy the Nomu with the help of the #2 hero, Hawks, and he incinerates the creature. He also believes that he metaphorically destroying his past ‘self,’ a man that can only spread pain and misery. In an after-credit scene, we’re shown Izuku having a dream. He sees Nana Shigura and the other pre-All Might One For All Wielders (OFA). In the vision, he sees the day that All For One (AFO) forced the original power onto his younger brother, the original OFA. OFA reaches out to Izuku saying “it’s you, you’re the ninth.” Izuku wakes up, his body sparking with energy. Hell of a cliffhanger. Let’s get to it, shall we?

We open with Class 1A talking about the Endeavor Nomu fight from the previous day. We’re shown highlights of that fight as well, how Endeavor and Hawks combined attacks so that Endeavor hit the Nomu into the sky and incinerated him. He thoroughly impressed Kirishima (dude who can harden his skin). Todoroki (Fire and Ice elemental) comes in and Izuku asks how his dad is doing. Todoroki confirms he’s doing well, all things considered, and is clearly still not sure how to feel about his dad. Class starts, and Aizawa (Erases quirks temporarily with a look) and tells the students that they’re going to be stepping up their training now that more of them have Provisional Hero Licenses. An alarm starts going off, telling the students they’re going to have a mock villain drill, to suit up and be ready to fight. They do so as Izuku explains the premise of the series, 80% of the world has superpowers called quirks, he’s in training to use his quirk to be a professional hero.

Togeta is kind of loving this.

They’re brought into one of the faux cities, and break into groups. Koda (speaks to animal) calls birds in to help with recon, Jiro (extendable earphone jack like earlobes) plugs into the ground to hear for additional information, and Shoji (has tentacle like arms he can grow additional sensory organs on) uses his multiple eyes to get a visual. A building has collapsed and is on fire. Yaoyorozu (creates inorganic items) makes a cart for Iida to pull everyone to the fire. She, Iida (superspeed), Shoto, Tokoyami (controls a shadow monster called Dark Shadow), Sato (Superstrength based on how much sugar he eats) and Aoyama (bellybutton laser) go to join her, but then they hear someone was knocked into the river from Koda. Tsu (Frog-like powers) and Mineta (creates sticky balls from his head) join up to save the drowner. Izuku leads most of the other students in a rear guard, but Bakugo (explosive sweat) grabs Kaminari (electricity elemental) and Kirishima follows them. They’re going to look for the villain that caused the collapse.

At the fire, Todoroki uses his ice power to freeze the fire. Tsu has found the drowner, Togeta (formerly could pass through solid objects, had his powers removed), floating down the river towards a collapsed bridge. Tokoyami and Sato use their respective powers to grab Tsu and Mineta and do a fastball special. … That’s what Marvel calls it when a strongman picks up Wolverine and throws him at someone. Mineta covers the debris in his sticky balls and Tsu catches Togeta with her extendable tongue.

Hado is having fun too.

Another explosion rocks the city. Uraraka (can cancel out gravity with a touch) turns off the gravity for her team, Sero (fires tape from his elbows) which Ashido (shoots Acid) grabs and uses to swing around shooting her acid. Aoyama helps by firing his laser at the broken building, causing it to collapse and smother the fire the second fire. Todoroki rapidly freezes the main blaze again. Izuku’s team is suddenly attacked by Hado (fires a spiral energy blast from her hands that she can also fly on) who is playing the villain today, as is Amajiki (takes on qualities of the things he eats).  Amajiki, who still has serious stage fright, tries to leave but Hado convinces him to stay because this is their job today. She notices Iida’s team starting to try to circle around them, so she blasts them. The shockwave knocks Togeta back into the water, so Tsu and Mineta go after him, with Iida, Todoroki and Tokoyami following to give backup.

Jiro wants to go help save Ashido, who is being held by Hado, but Shoji reminds her they need to keep scouting in case there are more villains.

Amajiki enters his fight mode, growing tentacles, wings, and a clamshell shield. On Izuku’s orders, Uraraka releases Ashido, causing her to drop, and Hagakure (refracts light to make herself invisible) leaps off a building to grab her. She blinds Hado, who is then caught in a net fired from a cannon by Yaoyorozu. Ojiro (has a big tail) starts fighting Amajiki but gets tangled in his tentacle fingers. Izuku rushes Amajiki while he’s distracted. Izuku pulls the punch, though, asking him to surrender. He knocks Izuku aside and prepares to take him out, but then Bakugo’s squad joins them, they made Kaminari charge a car battery and had him drive up. Bakugo launched Kirishima at Amajiki with an explosion, and he knocked Amajiki aside. Bakugo launches into the air and attacks Amajiki, using his explosive flight to circle around Amajiki and slam him into the ground. The drill ends, as Iida’s crew had saved Togeta again.

Bakugo demands that Amajiki fight him, exploding him when Amajiki refuses. Aizawa and All Might, who had been watching from a distance, sigh and order a robot bring Bakugo to the faculty lounge for a scolding. The episode ends as Izuku and his friends walk away from the explosion a bit crispy.

Yep, Dabi is still scary.

In a post-credit scene, we’re show Endeavor in his hospital bed. He’s heavily bandaged and unconscious. He remembers Hawks stopping his fall after his victory against the Nomu. Dabi then joins them, introducing himself to Endeavor, saying this is their first meeting but heavily implying that it is in fact not their first meeting. In the waking world, we’re shown Hawks meeting with Dabi as part of a meeting.

Sigh, another recap episode in the books. I really can’t say much more about this one than that. This is a filler episode designed to catch viewers up on events if they either are starting with season 5 for some reason or need a refresher after the hiatus. We get just enough of each of the kids to show off their individual powers, show off a few relationships (Bakugo and his personal squad with Kaminari and Kirishima, Izuku as a sort of de facto team lead, etc.), and remind us of the big world threat that the League of Villains represent. And to clue us in on the next ongoing plot, Hawks working with the League. Aside from that post credit bit, there’s really nothing earth shattering or interesting to talk about in this episode, so I won’t try. Have a good night, everyone!
